It’s amazing how forgetful we can be.
When I read today’s scripture, it really struck me that the women who went to the tomb had to be reminded that they were told by Jesus that he would be crucified and raised again on the third day. Only after they were reminded of this did they recall it. They were too busy mourning and wondering how their Savior could have died to remember the glorious end that Jesus had already told them would happen.
As I read that for the 1,000th time I thought, “Wait a minute, you mean to tell me that they had witnessed the other details of the story that Jesus told them come true, but somehow they forgot that minor point.” How can that be? How can these servants of Jesus hear and see over and over again the miraculous words of Jesus come true right before their eyes and yet forget when He told them that he would be raised again. It seems almost impossible, doesn’t it?
If I were to put this in modern day terms, though, I think I could understand it a bit better. I may not have Jesus in the flesh with me, but I’ve got His words and I’ve got the Holy Spirit. I’m no different than those women at the tomb. I often forgot the words of Jesus when I worry about what’s going to happen tomorrow, when I feel abandoned, and when I doubt that the grace of Jesus if sufficient.
Perhaps if Jesus can rise from the dead then He can also keep the other promises that He has given to me and to you. Remember, we serve the risen Savior, Jesus Christ! Let’s not forget that awesome fact.
Thought for the day: In what area of my life have I become like the women at the tomb and forgotten the promises of Jesus? Remember, Jesus is alive and His words are still true — so claim them for yourself today.
