My thoughts (Ben Lamb):
I’d always thought this parable was referring to a one-time, individual event and how we shouldn’t act like hogs at a feeding trough and jockey for a place of prominence in the presence of others at such an event.
But Jesus’ teachings are supposed to be guidelines for his followers to strive for in all parts of life. So, I had to ask myself, “What’s it all mean in the larger context of my whole life? How can I apply this parable every day, not just at intermittent swanky events held at glitzy joints?”
Verse 11 jumped out at me the most: “…those who humble themselves will be exalted.” Who could have been more humble than Jesus? Here’s someone who left perfect Heaven, came to this planet Earth, spent 33 years as a human, changed the course of human history, died, was brought back to life, and then went back to Heaven.
Jesus never: wrote a blockbuster book, did publicity tours, received royalties for his intellectual properties, charged admission for his healing services, or showed favoritism.
He did, however, wash others’ feet (a servant’s job), learn a trade (carpentry), know how to cry (John 11:35), show compassion to many people, and willingly give his life for us.
Jesus is the ultimate example of what it’s like to be humble.
