Today’s verses are probably my most favorite!
I think because our culture, in general, doesn’t take children seriously, we smile politely at these verses and pass them off as a “feel good Jesus” passage. I find them to be much more than that. They are a wake-up call to listen and learn from children!
What can we learn from how children receive the kingdom of God? The thing kids always teach me about the kingdom is wonder. Countless times my kids have yelled at me to get outside. I come running, expecting to find disaster, instead I find them pointing to a puffy cloud. “Mama, isn’t that cloud awesome! Do you see Sponge Bob in the cloud? Did God use the clouds to paint Sponge Bob?” Looking at the wonder on their faces, I am truly convinced God painted Sponge Bob just for them! God’s wonderful creation just blows their minds!
They teach me that the kingdom is all around me. Perhaps even more powerful they teach me the kingdom of God is within me.
Recently, at the Children’s Museum, my girls and I were watching a drama about Anne Frank. It was a moving monologue given by Anne’ father. The drama was powerful, but even more powerful was sitting there, with my girls, as silent tears streamed down all of our cheeks. I knew in that moment the kingdom of God was within each of us. The girls reminded me that the God-spark that longs to bring justice and unconditional love to us all burns brightest in the children!
