I’m Not Sure… What Do You Think?

Today’s scripture: Matthew 21:23-27 (ESV-text and audio) (KJV) (The Message) What might God be saying to me?

My thoughts (Tammy Mills):

“I’m not sure… what do you think?” is a strategy I use with my kids. I use it to see what they have learned or what they might know about something. It is usually used in the context of a difficult conversation.

For example, my youngest daughter might ask something about where babies come from, and my reply will be “I’m not sure… what do you think”? I call it a teaching technique. My partner sarcastically refers to it as an avoidance technique.

Either way, it is a good strategy for trying to get my kids to think for themselves. It also helps me keep from spouting off more info than they really need or want!

You can imagine the relief and sense of affirmation I felt when I read this scripture and saw that Jesus also used this technique! Rather than answering the question directly, Jesus, ever the great teacher, knows those asking need to come to their own terms about where his authority comes from.

Thought for the day: How do I answer Jesus question? What does my answer say about where I am in my spiritual journey?
