Refreshing Hope

Today’s scripture: Matthew 5:3-12 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?

My thoughts (Ben Lamb):

Ever have one of those days when it seems like your world is falling apart? If you haven’t, you simply must let me know how you do it!

Jesus’ words in today’s portion of chapter 5 must have brought healing to the heart, mind, and soul of many of his listeners. Everyday people; just like those of all humanity who have been having ups and downs for thousands of years.

While reading this, I’m picturing Jesus walking around to specific individuals whom he already knows happens to greatly need a particular word of his refreshing hope and uplifting good news personally delivered.

We can take comfort in knowing that Jesus’ words have no expiration date. They continue to be useful in our own everyday lives as well. Verse 4 is an example: “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” Even during times of mourning, we can be comforted. Friends (true ones) ask what needs to be done, or simply do genuinely helpful things without being prompted. And, the Holy Spirit provides comfort in a special way, too. These truly are blessings to aid us during periods of mourning.

The same theme rings out in the remainder of the reading: even when things seem less than perfect, Jesus offers a promise of hope and refreshment.

Thought for the day: In what way(s) am I still receiving blessings even though the rest of the world might view some situation of mine as tough-going?

We encourage you to include a time of prayer with this reading. If you need a place to get started, consider the guidelines on the How to Pray page.
