Today’s scripture: John 7:25-36 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?
My thoughts (Cheryl Stonestreet):
We argue among ourselves and with others about what Jesus meant when he said “[fill in the blank]”. Should the Bible be individually interpreted, or only in community? Should it be taken literally? What about all those loopholes? What about the culture at that time in history? As I read today’s passage, it’s clear that these are not new arguments or questions.
The people Jesus encountered weren’t quite sure what he was talking about either. And there seemed to be vast differences in interpretations of “The Law.” Moreover, people expected much more from a messiah. They wanted a gigantic wise warrior to come out of nowhere and perform great and spectacular deeds for the Jewish people and against all their enemies! They wanted someone who was direct, who called things either black or white, someone who would end all confusion. And what they got was a local kid who claimed he was different from everyone else. Sure he was smart, but a messiah? Yes, he knew some tricks, but a messiah?
It sounds blasphemous to ask these things, but who hasn’t thought this? In some places it may even be socially dangerous to reveal such thoughts. But in reading today’s passage, I get a sense that asking questions about Jesus, and our faith, is actually all part of our tradition, too.
Think about it. Where would you be (in your faith) if you didn’t question things?
Prayer for today: Lord, thank you for my curious mind. Thank you for your wisdom in making me seek out your answers, for this has made my life much more fulfilling. Amen.
