Sprinkles

Today’s scripture: Isaiah 52:13-15 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?

My thoughts (Carla Peck):

Today’s scripture makes me think of a hot fudge sundae, with sprinkles on top!

All of us have things that we are naturally good at or experience with, which I’ll call the ice cream and hot fudge. These things display the flavor of our identity. Then there are those things we may like to try, or receive encouragement from others to try, but shy away from attempting because we believe the outcome won’t be as good as hot fudge and ice cream.

It’s the sprinkles, though, that bring delight to the eye and a smile. I love seeing the children in our Church participate in the worship service. The children’s eagerness to serve and participation makes me smile, just like sprinkles do. When it comes to service in the name of the Lord, all of us have the opportunity to be sprinkles. That is, to try a service opportunity that may be unfamiliar to us. Through service to God, we may learn, transform, ignite a spark to move other mountains in our lives, encourage others, cause angels to dance, and delight God.

Some sprinkles may include singing in the choir, playing an instrument again, participating during Holy Communion as a prayer giver or an acolyte, ushering, helping with hospitality or media, praying with someone, lending a listening ear, or welcoming a visitor at church.

Thought for the day: Where is my opportunity to be a sprinkle? By stretching myself in service to God, I shall prosper, be exalted, and lifted up.

We encourage you to include a time of prayer with this reading. If you need a place to get started, consider the suggestions on the How to Pray page.
