When Stress is a Sin

Today’s scripture: Genesis 35 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?

My thoughts (Kirsten Shaw):

“So Jacob instructed all those in his household to destroy the idols they had brought with them, and to wash themselves, and to put on fresh clothing.” (Genesis 35:2)

Scott Presson defines an idol as “any person, object or activity you give a higher priority in your life than a relationship with God.”

I can totally wrap my brain around his definition.

And at first glance, I humbly score a gold star on the “God vs. Idol” priority quiz. After all, God leads me better than any boss could. God drives me further than any car would. And God cleanses me better than any bubble bath should.

Then Pastor John Pavlovitz comes along, kicks it up a notch, and adds emotions to the list of potential idols:

“Fear has become a false God, one too many of us worship with complete and undying devotion.”

Ouch.

Talk about punching me right in the feels!

Can I even begin to count the number of anxiety attacks and bouts of depression that have immobilized my world and crippled me with pain?

Spoiler Alert: I cannot.

How often have I let a concern consume me rather than lifting it up to the One who knows best? If my God is as big and strong as I know my God to be, how arrogant must I be to cling to such pointless fretting and dismay?

How about you? How often do you let the darkness win your favor?

Thought for the day: Gracious God, please give me the courage to be weak in your strength. Shower me with the peace, joy, and humility that come from putting more faith in You than my fears. Amen.
