Did You Hear?

Today’s scripture: Romans 16:17-27 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?

My thoughts (David Zier):

Have you ever met someone who just loved to stir the pot? No matter what you said, they would say the opposite. No matter what you did, they would drag you down. Nothing was ever right unless it was their way. How does that make you feel, and what kind of friend is that?

What about the stories we hear or tell in church among our friends. Have you ever heard someone say mean spirited things about others, especially if they are so steamy and lurid, who can help but listen and spread the word?

How should we respond?

Paul tells us to be wise about what is good and innocent about what is evil (verse 19). That means we should avoid the mean spirited stories about others, be mindful of what we say, and stay away from the rumors and gossip that drag everyone down. If we don’t contribute to it, refuse to listen to it, and speak against it, it can’t happen!

Is there a reason why Paul concludes Romans with these final instructions before the Doxology of the letter? Perhaps this is the lasting impression Paul wants to leave his readers with. It was that important, and a lasting message for us today. It is also a hard thing to overcome. Pray about it.

Thought for the day: God, help me to think on right things, and say good things, so your peace can fill my heart.

We encourage you to include a time of prayer with this reading. If you need a place to get started, consider the suggestions on the How to Pray page.
