Get Real!

Last week we talked about the importance of showing grace (i.e., undeserved kindness) in the workplace. Sounds great, right? Who doesn’t like a heartwarming story about kindness triumphing?

But is the world really that simple? What about accountability when someone misbehaves? What about justice when someone exploits? Where should we draw the line between grace and justice in the workplace (and elsewhere)?

Kung Fu Fighting

When you’re at work and someone “up the chain” treats you unfairly, how do you respond? Given the power differential, most of us can only grin and bear it — which creates enormous stress and frustration.

This sermon explores an alternative strategy — one that is recommended by the Bible — that gives great power to the powerless. Join us as we continue our series Thriving at Work.

Thank God It’s Monday!

The truth is, you can’t be happy in life if you’re not happy at work, because work consumes so much of our lives. Join us as we look at practical spiritual principles than can help us navigate the treacherous terrain of the work place.

This sermon is the first in a new series, Thriving At Work.

Dead Man Walking

Warning! If you’re looking for an Easter sermon that rhapsodizes about Jesus’ resurrection, but fails to connect it to anything relevant to everyday life, you’ll be disappointed by this sermon!

But if you’re hungry for some practical insights that can help you connect the power of Jesus’ resurrection to your everyday life, we encourage you to watch.

A Rock and a Hard Place

This sermon is probably different from anything you’ve ever heard on Palm Sunday. Together, we’ll re-imagine what Jesus’ triumphal entry would be like if it occurred in our time, right here in our city.

What would Jesus ride on? Who would cheer him? Who would play the role of the Pharisees and object? And what message would the rocks be tempted to shout out?

Generational Bondage

How does your family’s past affect you today? That’s a huge question — scary even! For most of us, it’s a mixed bag. We carry both blessings and wounds from our upbringing.

As we wrap up our sermon series on “The Inferior Kings of Israel and Judah”, we’ll take a look at how dysfunctions accumulated over generations finally led to national bondage, and apply the lessons we learn to our own personal past. This is a message of great hope!

Why Bother?

Remember when you were growing up and your mother would say, “I work so hard to keep this house clean, but then you kids just come along and mess it up. I don’t know why I bother!”

Every one of us has experienced that same feeling. We work really hard to build something, only for someone else to come along and tear it down. Why bother?

In this sermon we’ll learn from an Old Testament king who faced the same dilemma.

Reduced To Tears

At some point, it happens to us all, or someone we love — that time when the doctor sighs and says, “I’m sorry, but. . . .” When that time comes, when our health begins to fail, when some chronic disease is diagnosed, how should we respond?

Next week (really, we mean it this time!) our webcast is going to look a lot different! It will have a larger, higher-quality picture, and faster download times with less waiting. It will be cross platform (it’ll work on a Mac!) and can be easily shared on your own website or on facebook. You’ll notice today’s webcast was recorded with just one camera. Please bear with us as we transition to the new system.

What’s a Nice Girl Like Me Doing In a Place Like This?

That’s the question Pastor Vivian answers in this sermon. How did a straight black woman from the south with a conservative religious background become a pastor in a midwest church that is so thoroughly integrated and welcomes so many LGBT people? Inquiring minds want to know!

Very soon (maybe next week) our webcast is going to look a lot different! It will have both a larger, higher-quality picture, and faster download times with less waiting. The new format will be cross platform (it’ll work properly on a Mac!) and can even be shared on your own website or on facebook. Front Porch

Whatever happened to the front porch in American culture? Front porches used to be everywhere –- an open invitation for friends and neighbors to have a seat and share a bit of life. Now the emphasis has shifted to patios and decks on the back of our homes –- invitation only –- for those rare occasions when our schedule permits socializing. Is that how life’s supposed to be? Is that what makes us happy?

How Change Happens

This sermon explores a story of remarkable change buried deep in the Old Testament. The story tells how a group of people determined to exact revenge underwent a complete change of heart and ended up tending to the needs to their former enemies. What caused such a remarkable transformation? And how can we learn to create that kind of change in our families, workplaces, and communities?
