Today’s scripture: Matthew 6:19-24 (NRSV) (The Message)
As you read, consider: What might God be saying to me? Summarize your thoughts in a sentence or two.
My thoughts (Steve Adams):
Consider this “hypothetical” example: Justin is really excited! He’s gotten new video games, an MP3 player, and a new computer for Christmas. The only problem is there just isn’t enough time in the day for these new “toys.” He’s an enthusiastic member of the youth group at church, and recently committed to focused prayer for at least ten minutes per day. But, he’s almost stopped doing it. He does pray a sentence or two now and then, but not with the same intensity and joy he previously did. He notices the downward slide of his spiritual life, of course, but the realization bounces off his mind in a split second, and then it’s on to other things.
Amazingly enough, Jesus pinpointed what was happening here. Are our treasures on earth or in heaven? The false treasures on earth get eaten by moths, or destroyed by rust, of stolen by thieves. And, as Jesus makes clear, your heart will be with what you treasure.
Verse 22 tells about another great truth. I think “the eye” represents what we look at, what we focus on. If we focus on godly, heavenly treasures, we’ll be full of light, insight and wisdom. But if we focus on earthly things and mistake them for God (and what God can do for us) then we’ll be spiritually sick.
I think we all get caught up in the toys like Justin did. If it happens to you or someone you know this Christmas, then I would encourage you to be loving and patient. I know for myself, when I’ve gone through a time of overemphasis on material things, a period of emptiness follows. Afterwards, Jesus finds a way to touch me with his unequaled love, and I rediscover Him again. It’s only by drinking the Fountain of Living Waters that we can truly be satisfied!
Thought and prayer for the day: Lord, help me spend my money and time wisely this Christmas season, so my heart will be free to experience You in a deeper way than I ever have before!
We encourage you to include a time of prayer with this reading. Use the item above as a starting point, or consider the guidelines on the How to Pray page.
