Mistaken Identity?

Today’s scripture: Luke 9:18-22 (ESV-text and audio) (KJV) (The Message)

As you read, consider: What might God be saying to me? Summarize your thoughts in a sentence or two.

My thoughts (David Zier):

Just imagine that you are there as one of the Disciples, hearing Jesus ask, “Who is it that the people say that I am?” Then the next, even bigger question, “Who do you think that I am?” How would you answer these questions? It’s difficult to answer a question for others, but I think Jesus is really asking us to personalize this question. “Who is Jesus for me?

We can probably theologize the questions, and dissect them in many ways, but let’s make it simple. What does my life speak about who Jesus is for me? Do I or others recognize anything about Jesus in my life?

No, we’re not talking about any kind of perfection here, but we are talking about recognizing Jesus. Do I love? Do I show kindness? Do I care for the poor and outcast? Do I confront injustice? Do I turn to God in prayer and worship? Do I seek and discern God’s calling?

Who is Jesus for me? Each of us can only answer this question for ourselves. But how does my life live its answer?

Thought for the day: Do I see who Jesus is in the way I lived my life today?

We encourage you to include a time of prayer with this reading. If you need a place to get started, consider the guidelines on the How to Pray page.
