Freedom

Today’s scripture: Luke 4:31-37 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?

My thoughts (David Zier):

When reading today’s scripture, it might be easy to think, “This story is so foreign to what I have experienced, how does this relate to me?” Perhaps, it is hard to capture the moment of this event happening because one had to be present to get the full impact. It is probably one of those situations where you had to be there to fully understand this interaction between Jesus and this demon-possessed man.

As I read this passage and prayed about it, I thought, What is the evil from which I need to be set free? What is it that I have struggled against?

I know I can be my own worst critic, my own worst enemy. I can beat down on myself to the point where it is hard to feel God’s love. I need Jesus to be standing in front of me, calling that demon out! Now I can relate to that passage, and for the way Jesus called that evil spirit to leave!

What is the evil you need to be freed from? What is it that is stealing your love and joy, robbing your time, occupying your mind, preventing you from seeing and loving others, or even loving yourself? Take that into prayer. Invite Jesus into those places and ask for healing.

Prayer for the day: God, please give me freedom.

We encourage you to include a time of prayer with this reading. If you need a place to get started, consider the suggestions on the How to Pray page.
