A Final Lesson

Today’s scripture: Luke 22:47-53 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?

My thoughts (Sue Robinson):

The scene is set. Jesus has been praying in the garden in the middle of the night. He knows the time has come for his crucifixion. I’m sure he senses the approaching soldiers led by his disciple, Judas. This man will betray him by marking him with the sign normally reserved for friends … a kiss.

The disciples are ready for a fight. They are not going to allow Jesus to be taken! One even strikes a servant of the high priest on the ear, cutting it off. But Jesus stops this. In fact, he even re-attaches the ear and heals the servant. What a surprise that must have been to the injured person and the disciples as well!

But Jesus knew the hour had come. I see him speaking to the throng with sadness but a touch of humor as well. The absurdity of them sneaking out to get him in the night when all the while he had been before them each day in the city showed cowardice on their part.

His message had always been love. He showed love and compassion even to this nearly last encounter with his accusers. And in the days to come, he would continue to walk the path to the cross with calm determination to finish what he had come to accomplish.

I am so challenged to follow the example of forgiveness that Jesus modeled. When I have been wronged, it is easy to want to lash out and ‘cut off an ear’ of my tormenter. Can we instead choose to heal by forgiveness and love? Not an easy assignment!

Prayer for the day: Dear Lord, thank you for your walk to the cross for me. Let me show that I understand by practicing forgiveness every day. Amen

We encourage you to include a time of prayer with this reading. If you need a place to get started, consider the suggestions on the How to Pray page.
