Today’s scripture: Genesis 31:22-43 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?

Cut my pay 10 times and I have to tell you, I’d have a hard time not winning myself a “Resentful Employee of the Month” award. Not Jacob though. Nope! That dude was diligent. He didn’t waver in his work ethic. I would’ve been throwing resumes like raindrops all over town. But Jacob? He added enough spiritual sugar to make his lemons into lemonade; his flocks multiplied and he prospered.
At the end of April, Pastor Jeff spoke about learning to let go of that which no longer nourishes our spirit. Today’s scripture doesn’t defy his sermon. Instead, it presents some alternative considerations for times when we’re feeling eluded by a definitive decision.
When we make a habit of “doing more” than what is expected, we can find peace by prospering in other areas beyond financial:
– We can earn recognition and advancement
– We can build others’ confidence in us
– We can gain experience and knowledge
– We can please God
– We can develop our spiritual maturity
Just as there are different ways we feel and show the warm and fuzzies in our personal relationships, being aware of our love languages in a professional setting can also be a wonderful thing as part of our self awareness. In the truthful words of Kevin Kruse, “Life is about making an impact. NOT making an income.” May we never be so poor that all we have is money.
Thought for the day: Gracious God, please draw my attention to what matters most in every situation. Guide me in learning the lessons that will support my joy, bring me peace, and benefit those around me. Let me stay focused on what is in my heart more than what is in my bank account. Amen.
