Crazy Love / Priceless

On November 16, we had the opportunity to hear from two of our students who are in seminary at Earlham School of Religion. Vivian Wyatt, our student intern, preached at the 9:30 am and 6:00 pm services, and David Zier at the 11:00 am service. This was a requirement for a preaching class they’re taking.

They both used the same scripture, John 12:1-8.

Do you consider yourself to be practical? That’s a good thing, right?

What if the Spirit moved you to do something impulsive, selfless, extravagant? Would you do it? Or would you restrain yourself, thinking you might look foolish?

Listen or watch to learn about crazy, extravagant expressions of love from the example of Mary.

Five Steps to Financial Freedom

Last Sunday’s sermon was a tough one. We focused on the fact that, by any objective standard, we who live in the United States are fabulously wealthy. And with the wealth, according to Jesus, comes great responsibility.

So, how do we move forward? How do we make sense of that knowledge? Watch this sermon for some ideas that are thoughtful and practical, as we seek to live responsibly with the blessings we’ve been given.

Sacred Trust

Suppose someone knew a really important fact about your life or family background that was hidden from you. Are you the kind of person who would rather not be told? Or would you want to know the truth, no matter how shocking?

In this sermon, you will learn some shocking truths about yourself — and your status in this world. You will never again see yourself the same. But that’s good… because Jesus says truth sets us free.

Take My World Apart

Last September we celebrated our first-ever World Missions Day and the tradition continued this Sunday!

Our two special guests, Emily Young and Sarah Durnbaugh, shared their experiences working with New Community Project (NCP) in the Sudan. The mission of NCP is to provide experiences that change us, resources that challenge us, and a community that gives us hope.

Prosperity’s Challenge

Most of us aren’t accustomed to thinking of prosperity as a challenge. We tend to think of poverty as the challenge — and of prosperity as something that can solve those challenges.

Jesus didn’t see it that way. So what are we missing? This sermon examines one of prosperity’s greatest potential pitfalls — so we are better prepared to manage prosperity in our own lives.

If Only I Could Win the Lottery!

We begin a new series with this sermon: Mastering Our Money.

Uh-oh. Preacher’s gonna beg for my money — time to tune out.

That’s not the point of this series, at all. We begin this week with two concepts presented in scripture:

  • the righteous will prosper.
  • blessed are the poor.

How can both be true? What is God up to in presenting two truths that are in such apparent conflict?

This will be a fascinating, challenging, practical series that invites us to consider all aspects of our relationship with money — how we earn it, invest it, save it, spend it, share it, and even how we feel about it.

New Beginnings

This sermon concludes the series on names of God. This week, it’s more of a description than a proper name: “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.”

What can it mean to us to say that God is our beginning, and our end? Listen or watch as we discover insight about the power and presence of God. These names can be key to our understanding of life.

Seeing-Eye God

We’re continuing our series on names of God. This sermon examines the name El-Roi, the God who sees.

What does it mean to know that God sees me, that God is watching out for me? How could my life change if I really believed that God never let me out of sight?

Back to Our Roots

If Christianity had a slogan, what would it be?

  • Get more of what you want!
  • The ultimate fire insurance!
  • Discover your sense of superiority.

All kidding and misguided theology aside, what phrase would sum up the central Christian message?

This sermon looks at a name of God that captures the core message of the earliest Christians.

The One Whose Name Dare Not Be Spoken!

Did you know that near the end of Old Testament times, people were afraid to even say the name of God? Rather than using a proper name for the Deity, they substituted other titles.

But then along came Jesus, and he went in completely the other direction. He referred to God with a name that is surprisingly informal and intimate. Listen or watch as we explore that powerful name of God.
