Today’s scripture: John 13:18-30 (NRSV) (The Message)

My thoughts (Julie Benson):
I love how this passage is displayed with such vivid imagery: “One of [Jesus’] disciples –- the one whom Jesus loved –- was reclining next to him. Simon Peter therefore motioned to him to ask Jesus of whom he was speaking.”
The dynamic relationship between each disciple with Jesus must have been unique. Here we observe Simon Peter shying away from the questions he has for Jesus and delegates John to ask instead. I can just picture his motion that would seem to indicate, “You ask Him!”
When my brother and I were growing up, we would sometimes have our eyes locked on a common goal: dinner at a particular restaurant, a trip to a certain movie, a vacation to a specific destination. Since he was the older one with more experience badgering our father, I would defer the duty to him: “You ask him!”
In this Season of Lent, remember that you can approach the throne just as you are. Come with your anger, fear, sorrow, doubt, guilt, shame, joy, or thankfulness. Even if that means that you nag, bargain, question, plead, come in silence, or shout with praise. Don’t allow your feelings of fear or inadequacy to stand in the way of your communication with God. Whatever is on your heart or swirling in your mind: You ask Him!
