Today’s scripture: Matthew 13:51-52 (ESV-text and audio) (KJV) (The Message) What might God be saying to me?

My thoughts (Cheryl Stonestreet):

Today’s verses remind me of my visits with my nephew. Whenever I go to his house, I look forward to the ritual of him showing me his treasures. It happens with each visit.

It usually starts out with his newest acquisition, some toy or new item that he values and holds dear. He brings it out of his room and to where I am. He holds it up for me to see. He tells me in detail about all of its features, and what makes it so cool. He shows me how to operate it and hands it to me for closer inspection. My nephew has some pretty cool stuff, but what I like about these conversations is the intimacy of them. They are our bonding moments. It’s his way of saying, “I want to show you this so you can share in my joy.” And indeed, I do.

I’m the same way. When I find a great deal on something, I want to show it to all of my friends. I want to share the joy I feel toward my treasures. I know I’m not alone in this. Who hasn’t bought something and wanted to show it off?

In earlier verses (Matthew 13:44-45) Jesus tells his disciples about the kingdom of heaven. He uses similes to tell them how extraordinary and precious the kingdom of heaven is. He says, “the kingdom of heaven is like treasure. . . ” And you joyously trade everything you own for it, because we’re getting a much better deal! We are “trading up!”

Therefore, as a Scribe-In-Training for the kingdom of heaven, I believe it is my duty to share with you the joy of the treasures of the kingdom of heaven. Since it is impossible for me to do that in this space, let me just tell you this. God loves you. Don’t ever believe differently, don’t buy into somebody’s gloom and doom. God loves you. Don’t trade down. Keep trading up.

Thought for the day: God, thank you for loving me for who I am, flaws and all. And when I get discouraged from the trials of this life, thank you for reminding me that it is only temporary. Treasures await us. May I find joy in this always. May I share that joy with everyone. Amen.
