Response is Key

Today’s scripture: Romans 13:8-14 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?

My thoughts (James Hendrix):

The man was upset, and he wanted everyone assembled for the city council meeting to know it. For more than five minutes, he yelled and argued — often insulting people with his remarks. Several council members tried to calm him, but their pleas only fueled his anger. Finally one of the council members, known for his kindness and fairness, calmly asked the man if he would be willing to meet with him the next day to discuss his concerns. The disgruntled man mumbled a few words, agreed to the proposal, and eventually sat down.

All of us encounter angry people at some point, but how we respond to them is important. We can respond in anger or we can follow Christ’s example. Today’s Scripture reminds us that we are to love all people, even our enemies. As Christians, we have the power of God’s Spirit working in us to serve others and seek their good, loving them as God loves us.

Thought for the day: Lord, teach me the joy of loving others. Amen.
