Service to Others

Today’s scripture: James 2:14-17 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?

My thoughts (James Hendrix):

Sunday was World Mission’s Day at LifeJourney Church. Today, we are praying for Navajo Nation.

I did not expect the work to be so hard. My friend Richard needed some help knocking down one of his kitchen walls for a renovation project, so I had volunteered. I showed up early at his house one Saturday morning, eager to start. But, after using a sledgehammer for three hours, my arms and shoulders ached, and I wanted to quit. I knew I would disappoint Richard if I backed out, and I wanted to keep my promise to help him, so I kept working. Richard must have sensed my weariness, because he suggested that we take a break. After resting for thirty minutes, I gained a second wind and we finished the job just in time for dinner.

God has chosen us to help build the Kingdom of Heaven. One of the ways God calls us to help accomplish this purpose is by serving one another. Although we may become weary at times in ministering to our brothers and sisters, our work matters to God — and God will strengthen us as we reach out to others. Whether we prepare meals for our family, visit a neighbor who is lonely, or build homes for people of the Navajo Nation, God will work through us to make a difference in the lives of others.

Today, commit yourself to loving God and others, open your heart to the Holy Spirit, and see what God will accomplish through you.

Thought for the day: Lord, guide and strengthen us as we work to fulfill your plan. Amen. Use today to pray for the outreach to Navajo Nation, where we are helping to build homes for those in need.

We encourage you to include a time of prayer with this reading. If you need a place to get started, consider the suggestions on the How to Pray page.
