Are you more concerned about following Jesus’ example, or telling everyone what example Jesus was trying to convey?
Today’s scripture provides two examples of things that Jesus did on the Sabbath that upset the religious leaders of his day. Feeding the hungry and caring for the sick are two of the more prominent messages Jesus provides us by his words and examples. Why was doing this on the Sabbath so controversial? Beyond these two examples, Jesus also spent time with prostitutes, lepers, tax collectors, and Samaritans. In his day, these were considered the lowest of the low.
When I see some of the religious programming on TV or when I read the messages in popular Christian books today, I have to wonder who is the Jesus they’re talking about? There’s a lot of emphasis on the “prosperity” teachings about being rich in money and things. I’m afraid this takes our focus off of what Jesus teaches us as Disciples — it takes our attention away from Christ!
Jesus commands us to love one another, as he has loved us. I don’t understand why, but it seems religion has turned into a game of “What’s in it for me?”
Perhaps this was the same attitude of the Pharisees. Were they really concerned about what Jesus was doing on the Sabbath? Or were they more concerned about their own positions and status, and just who is this person ‘Jesus’ to tell them and show them what they ought to be about?
