God as Desire verses as Value

Today’s scripture: Isaiah 29:13-24 (NRSV) (The Message) (KJV) What might God be saying to me?

My thoughts (Ernest Disney-Britton):

Over lunch, three decades ago, a college mentor asked me what two things I valued most. I answered, “Artistic expression and health & fitness.” He responded that he could see how my singing in the college gospel choir, volunteering in the art gallery, performing in theatre productions, and my major in arts management demonstrated my passion for the arts. Then he pointed at the double cheeseburger, fries, and milk shake that I’d ordered for our lunch, and he asked, “How does this fit with valuing health?” I responded, ” Well, it is delicious.” But, I knew he was right. My words were not reflected in how I lived. I didn’t eat healthy. I didn’t exercise at all. My words reflected a desire but not something that I valued. Today’s verse, Isaiah 29:13-24 raises a similar question. Do I value God or just desire God? Is my God relationship more like how I value the arts or more like my desire for health & fitness?

Thought for the day: The bacon & cheddar cheeseburger is only delicious if I don’t value health. How is it I show that i value God?
