Today’s scripture: Matthew 22:15-22 (ESV-text and audio) (KJV) (The Message) What might God be saying to me?

I always find it interesting that those who opposed Jesus would try to trip him up or trick him into saying something that would discredit his ministry. In our reading today the Pharisees use a supposed faith-based concern to further their political agenda as they try to get Jesus to make a statement against the Roman government. They try to set him up in order to take him down. But Jesus sees through the charade and responds astutely and with frankness. He is clothed in his right mind and not shaken by their trickery.
He asks the trap-setters for a Roman coin and ironically, they have it. With brilliant verbal dexterity, Jesus flips the script and puts the responsibility back on the Pharisees to answer the question they have posed. Jesus asks whose image and inscription is on the coin and they reply, “The emperor’s.” Jesus, the incarnation of truth, then tells them to “render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s, and unto God what is God’s.” His answer ensnares them in the trap they set for him.
When I read these verses I cannot help but be reminded that when I accepted Jesus as my Lord and savior, I became part of God. Because I believe that Jesus died for my sins, that means that God bought and paid for me. Written across my heart is the name of Jesus and his face his imprinted on me. In worship, in service, and in my living I give my all to God. So as far as this world and the things therein, they belong to the world and with the world they will stay. But me, I belong to God and I freely render unto God what is God’s.
The text tells us that the enemies of Jesus were “amazed.” God will use us in ways that amaze and surprise those who wish to take us down. So the next time you feel as if the world is out to get you, don’t get flustered or defeated. Stand strong and know that you belong to God and no weapon formed against you shall prosper. I can hardly wait to see God’s next amazing move.
