Gentle Strength

Today’s scripture: Matthew 12:15-21 (ESV-text and audio) (KJV) (The Message) What might God be saying to me?

My thoughts (Brenda Corbello):

When I read the passage for today, I considered the concept of “gentle strength.” I thought about some of the people I have studied in the past who were quiet, soft-spoken and compassionate, but when they did speak, it was with authority and conviction. They did not need to raise their voice to get people to listen to them. Their authority was apparent. I long to be more like that.

I spent eleven years being a litigator, a profession that promotes raising your voice at times, and I certainly did not shy away from walking over anyone’s feelings. I was encouraged to push others into a corner. As much as I enjoyed winning, it always felt foreign to me to treat others that way. When I finally became stressed by the profession, I found that what I wanted most was to be a kind person. I wanted to find a career that would allow me to be strong, courageous, creative and most importantly, kind. I wanted to know what it was like to have people like you, not just fear you. I wanted people to see Jesus in me through my kindness, my compassion, and my strength — even while at work.

I believe it is important to remember that Jesus did what he believed to be the right thing to do, whether it was the most prudent choice or not. But, he was not boisterous about it. He just did what needed to be done and explained his reasons for doing so with compassion and tenderness.

We all face challenges, and it is important for us to remain true to ourselves in the face of adversity. We must be strong in our convictions, but never aggressive in our methods. We must assert the truth with tenderness and understanding, recognizing that there are still many people who do not see that we may be different from them, but we do serve the same God. God loves us and wants us to be of service too. But, we cannot force our way into the mainstream. I do believe that with patience and persistence, “justice will triumph.”

If we continue to do what is right, and I believe that our mission seeks to do what is right in the eyes of God, justice will prevail. We must be there for each other. Our loving kindness will heal many wounds, just like Jesus healed His followers. Jesus is God’s handpicked servant, and we are servants as well.

Thought for the day: I want to ask God to help me today to remember to hold my tongue when I get angry, to share His love with those around me, and to treat others as God would treat them. We will all be happier in the meantime.
